Shopify released Editions Fall 2026 under the name "Exponential," and most of it is aimed squarely at the people running stores. This is our merchant-only read of the release: what you can use, what's still on the way, and where to spend your time first. If you build apps or work at an agency, we wrote a separate developer breakdown of Fall 2026.

A quick framing note. Shopify organized the page into areas like Agentic, Sidekick, Online, Merchandising, Retail, Payments, Operations, Shop, Marketing and Fulfillment. We've kept roughly that order but cut it down to the parts a store owner will actually touch.

Shoppers are buying inside AI chats now

Short answer: Shopify Editions Fall 2026 ("Exponential") — direct checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini · multi-step Sidekick plans with one-click approval · scheduled Rollouts for theme updates, catalog pricing, and discounts · custom checkout fields · pre-authorization Shopify Protect rules · refreshed admin. Many items still carry coming-soon badges. Check each help doc first.

Area What changed Number Shopify gives
Agentic selling Sell in Google Search (including AI Mode) and the Gemini app 1B+ products discoverable; 400M+ Shop Pay accounts
Sidekick Make a plan, approve once, Sidekick applies multiple changes Daily sessions up 4.2x year over year
Store search Better suggestions while typing Add-to-carts from search up 8%
Shopify Protect Block fraud before it becomes an order; AI writes dispute responses 60% more “not received” disputes won
POS Expanded in-store customer recognition Known customers: 60%+ higher lifetime value
Shop Campaigns Pay only when an ad drives a sale 35+ new markets

The first section of the page is about agents, and the numbers Shopify leads with explain why: more than 1 billion products in its catalog can be discovered across AI channels, and over 400 million shoppers have Shop Pay accounts.

Here's what that turns into for your store:

  • Google Search, AI Mode, and the Gemini app. You can sell there with checkout powered by Shopify. Shoppers buy in the chat and you manage the orders in your admin.
  • Shop Pay inside more assistants. Customers can find products, approve purchases and pay with Shop Pay in Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct.
  • Markdowns that agents can see. Your compare-at price is passed to AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog, which means sale pricing shows up with no extra setup.
  • A Catalog eligibility check. You can see whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and what to change if it doesn't.
  • Control over what agents say about you. You review and approve the facts shared with agents, including policies and FAQs, and Shopify suggests how to improve that content.
  • Retail locations for agents. AI agents can discover your physical stores and send shoppers to the nearest one.

The other half of this is running your business from a chat. Shopify lists connections to Grok, Google Gemini, Meta's Muse, and Microsoft Copilot, and you can pin Shopify to the ChatGPT sidebar to see total sales, store sessions, and conversion rate. You can also hand a digital file to an agent and get a product with product pricing, order fulfillment, and a shareable link, or describe what you want to sell and import products from other sellers through Shopify Collective.

Sidekick takes on bigger jobs

Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions are up 4.2x year over year. This Edition is about letting it do real work rather than answer questions. It can now handle complex workflows, stage several changes at once, compute, write code, and search the internet, and it remembers what you asked.

The pattern that matters most: you make a plan, approve it once, and Sidekick applies multiple changes, such as rewriting descriptions for every product in a collection. Other things you can hand it:

  • Creating or editing draft orders, with changes highlighted before you save or discard.
  • Pricing questions, answered with product-level recommendations from Shopify Smart Pricing models.
  • Payout questions: why one came in lower, what's driving chargebacks, how to verify your business in Shopify Payments.
  • Building customizations in the checkout and accounts editor and the Checkout Blocks app.
  • Print-on-demand: upload or generate a design, preview it on a product, then publish.

Sidekick also understands the apps in your stack, and its growth recommendations can include them along with web research on your industry. Recommendations can be tested with SimGym before you choose which to apply. In the redesigned admin, Sidekick sits in a floating prompt on every page.

We tried to picture the first week. It's a lot. Our advice: start small. Pick one collection, let Sidekick rewrite it, and read every line before you approve.

Storefront and merchandising

Storefront updates: Canvas lets you design the full store in one view with Sidekick (20% faster from blank slate to launch) · predictive store search lifts search add-to-carts by 8% · right-to-left storefronts now support Arabic, Hebrew, and Urdu.

Rollouts are worth learning before your next sale. You can schedule a launch, store event, or experiment that bundles theme, checkout configuration, market catalogs, and discounts, run A/B tests, and have catalog price changes roll back automatically when the promotion ends.

In the catalog itself: collections can combine products and variants from multiple sources, variants are edited on the product page with bulk controls, product data can be mapped per sales channel, each variant can carry up to 20 barcodes, and you can sell access to things like templates and bookings by adding a URL to a product.

We think Rollouts is the sleeper feature. It's boring on paper. It won't be boring on Black Friday.

Checkout, payments and fraud

Several checkout changes are labeled "rolling out soon": custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor (text inputs, date pickers, checkboxes, choice lists), a tiled layout for payment methods, and an animated thank-you page. A stacked form layout and Apple Pay in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox via QR code are listed as coming soon.

Fraud & dispute rules: Shopify Protect blocks high-risk orders before payment authorization · drafts chargeback replies with carrier delivery proof · lets you write and backtest custom risk rules · wins 60% more "product not received" disputes per Shopify · extended non-Shop Pay coverage is coming soon.

Also new: Shopify Tax managed end to end for businesses new to the platform in the US, all-in international pricing with flat-rate shipping through Shopify Managed Markets (Shopify cites +50% higher international conversion), more local payment methods, a clearer payouts view, and Shop Pay Installments for Australian businesses in early access.

Don't plan around the “coming soon” items yet. We'd only build on what's labeled live.

POS for physical stores

POS now recognizes more customers through the network of people who've checked out with Shopify Payments, and Shopify says a known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown one. Staff can pull up a known customer's abandoned online cart and finish the sale in store. Carts are saved across devices, stock counts can be scheduled from the admin, every sale can be tracked to an associate, and receipts get a customizable template that adds tax summaries for the EU, the UK, and Canada.

That 60% figure is Shopify's, not ours. Still, it's a strong reason to ask for an email at the till.

Marketing, Shop and fulfillment

  • Campaign Autopilot runs AI campaigns on Microsoft Advertising, Snapchat Ads, and soon X Ads, including SEO.
  • Shop Campaigns opens in over 35 new markets, and you only pay when an ad drives a sale.
  • Shopify Messaging adds automated WhatsApp messages and a pre-built Black Friday email campaign.
  • Shop gets universal checkout across brands, and carts sync between Shop and your store.
  • The Shop Promise badge helps products rank higher in Shop and Shopify Catalog.

Admin and analytics

The admin is getting a complete refresh, rolling out to all pages soon. Smaller quality-of-life changes include passkeys, file folders, auto-generated store policies, inline metafield editing, a filterable change log (coming soon), and app extension status monitoring (coming soon). In analytics you can add annotations, see app events like loyalty points redeemed, and get session counts with smarter bot filtering. Shopify Flow can now trigger when a product's retail price, tag, or metafield changes.

We'd turn on passkeys today. It's a two-minute job.

Where we'd start

  1. Run the Shopify Catalog eligibility check and fix what it flags.
  2. Read and approve the business facts agents will use, especially return and shipping policies.
  3. Make sure compare-at prices are set correctly on discounted items.
  4. Give Sidekick one bulk task and review its plan before approving.
  5. Build your Black Friday changes as a single rollout.
  6. Ask your app vendors whether they're ready for Shopify's platform changes. Apps that used script tags, for example, have to move to newer extension methods.

When the free, built-in tools are enough

You don't need a new app for most of this. Sidekick, Rollouts, Shopify Messaging, Shopify Forms and Translate & Adapt all come from Shopify. We'd start there. Add a third-party app only when a built-in tool can't do a job you've actually hit, and check that the app has moved off script tags first.

Questions merchants are asking

Is all of this live today?

No. Many items are marked "coming soon," "rolling out soon" or "early access." Check the help doc linked from each item on the Editions page.

Do I have to set anything up for AI agents to see my sale prices?

According to Shopify, compare-at prices flow to agents through Shopify Catalog with no extra setup, as long as your store is eligible for Catalog.

Will Sidekick change things without asking?

The page describes a plan-and-approve flow: you approve once, then Sidekick applies the changes. Draft order edits are highlighted for review before you save.

Is any of this limited to certain plans?

Some items are. For example, payouts in more currencies are exclusive to Advanced and Shopify Plus plans, and organization-level roles are exclusive to Shopify Plus.
