If you ship a Shopify app, Fall 2026 is an Edition to read with a calendar open. The developer section of the Editions page is split into four parts (agentic experiences, platform primitives, tooling and a security block), and some of it carries hard requirements for staying on the App Store. This post covers the developer side only. For the merchant-facing features your customers will ask about, see our Fall 2026 merchant guide.
Start with the deadlines
Short answer: For app developers, Shopify Editions Fall 2026 brings two hard deadlines (no new script tags, expiring tokens before January 2027), new agentic surfaces (a shopping MCP, WebMCP, Catalog API and UCP endpoints), app events and annotations in analytics, 14 Polaris component APIs, an agent-friendly CLI and new App Pricing tools.
| Area | What changed | Number Shopify gives |
|---|---|---|
| Script tags | Apps can no longer create or update them | Migrate to theme app extensions or web pixels |
| Access tokens | Expiring tokens required to stay listed | Before January 2027 |
| Catalog API | Commission from Shop Campaigns plus Shopify bonus | +0.3% on sales you drive (early access) |
| Polaris | New component APIs on the CDN, semantic versioning | 14 new component APIs |
| Events system | Topics across products, store orders, inventory, and more | 18 topics |
| Referrals | Revenue share for businesses you bring to Shopify | All plans, for 4 years |
Two items affect almost every app team. They come first.
- Script tags. Apps can no longer create or update script tags. They must migrate to theme app extensions or web pixels. If any part of your storefront footprint still depends on script tags, that work moves to the top of the backlog.
- Expiring tokens. Apps need to migrate to expiring tokens before January 2027 to stay listed on the Shopify App Store. Shopify points to client credentials as the way to get access tokens yourself.
Alongside those, the App Store is tightening up. App names must be unique and recognizable. Reviews are checked against shop trust, merchant identity, and app activity so that ratings reflect businesses that actually use the app. You can also restrict which IP addresses can make API calls for each app, which limits the damage from a leaked token, and the AI Toolkit can scan your app for vulnerabilities with a single prompt. Adding your org's details in the Dev Dashboard means they're shown on collaborator requests.
We're in the same boat. Our own apps get the same audit. Don't leave it to December.
Agentic commerce: the new surface area
Shopify is positioning agents as a channel, and it gave developers a fairly complete toolkit for building on it.

Shopping MCP: Shoppers sign in with their Shop account · search products across Shopify Catalog · check out from brands on or off Shopify with Shop Pay.
WebMCP storefront tools: Online stores register structured tools · visiting AI agents discover products, build carts, and guide buyers through checkout.
Catalog API
- New filters for products with 3D models or video.
- Sale prices and safety warnings returned with every product, plus markdown amounts for agentic search.
- Personalized results for shoppers signed in with Shop.
- Products from businesses not on Shopify, in beta.
- In early access: earn the commission businesses set in Shop Campaigns, plus 0.3% from Shopify, on sales you drive through the Catalog API.
Universal Commerce Protocol
UCP gets a /buy endpoint for cart and checkout permalinks that carry products, customer details, promo discounts, and order attribution, and an /ask endpoint that answers questions about a store grounded in facts the business has published. Agents can also surface retail locations for brands on Shopify through UCP.
Checkout anywhere
You can add Shop Pay to any app or shopping experience, build unified checkout across brands, and embed Shopify's checkout into web, native mobile, and agentic experiences with the updated Checkout Kit.
We wouldn't build on all of these at once. Pick one. It's easier to learn the shape of agent traffic with a single surface.
Platform primitives worth building on
Analytics hooks
This is the quiet win for most app categories. Apps can define and send events to Shopify so merchants analyze app activity next to store data, and UI extensions can log app events across checkout and customer accounts with a single line of code. Apps can also write annotations to analytics through the GraphQL Admin API, so merchants see what changed and which app did it. Linked metaobjects can be enabled as dimensions in ShopifyQL. If your app's value is hard to prove (loyalty, email, reviews, upsell), this is a native place to show it.

Polaris
Fourteen new Polaris component APIs ship on the CDN, including typography, number and progress, and empty states. Polaris versions now follow semantic versioning, and you can follow, pin, or preview a version so bigger changes land on your schedule.
POS extensions
The Printing API lets POS UI extensions print receipts, shipping labels, and slips. Background extensions can respond when transactions complete or cash-tracking sessions start and end. A Storage API lets targets within one extension subscribe to shared keys.
Admin API and Functions
- Query purchase orders, line items, and statuses, which is useful for ERP and inventory apps.
- See which resources belong to an active rollout and subscribe to webhooks for changes.
- Return APIs expose taxes calculated on return shipping fees.
- Delivery customizations in Shopify Functions can read metafields on delivery options; reading metaobjects for each checkout is coming soon.
- Shop sign-in supports granular consent scopes, and there's one-tap Shop sign-in for your app.
- New packages let you build apps in Python or PHP frameworks.
We'd ship one app event first. It's a small change. It'll tell you fast whether merchants look at it.
Tooling: Dev Dashboard and CLI
The Dev Dashboard is redesigned so you can build, monitor, and manage apps and stores, with billing and payouts in the same place. Coming soon, you'll submit listings, set pricing, and run app ads from there too. A store index page combines every store type into one list and lets you request collaborator access.

Shopify CLI is now optimized for non-interactive input and output, letting an agent manage your apps, store themes, and stores. Agents can create, list, or delete dev stores from the CLI. Querying production logs from the CLI is coming soon. The Events system covers 18 topics across products, collections, customers, companies, orders, fulfillment, inventory levels, store content, and custom data.
We like the CLI change most. It's what lets an agent do the boring parts.
App Pricing and revenue
- A built-in tool moves subscriptions from the Billing API to Shopify App Pricing.
- Unlimited private plans, each with any number of stores, for enterprise deals.
- Annual plans with monthly usage charges in one subscription, coming soon.
- Capability requirements per plan so that merchants only subscribe to what works for their store.
- Estimated prices localized across markets in listings, the plan picker, and charge approvals.
- Earn from subscription revenue and online GMV for every business you bring to Shopify, on all plans, for four years.
Merchants can also monitor the status of each app extension in app settings and contact the developer directly (coming soon). Expect broken extensions to be noticed faster.
We'd read the pricing changes twice. They're easy to miss.
Sprint checklist
- Audit for script tags and plan the move to theme app extensions or web pixels.
- Plan the expiring-token migration well ahead of January 2027.
- Confirm your app name is unique, and fill in your org details in the Dev Dashboard.
- Turn on IP restrictions and run an AI Toolkit security check.
- Pick one app event and one analytics annotation to ship.
- Pin your Polaris version.
- If you use the Billing API, test the migration tool to App Pricing.
- Decide whether Catalog API, UCP, or WebMCP fit your product.
When Shopify's native options are enough
Native alternatives: App events and GraphQL annotations inside Shopify Analytics replace custom reporting screens · the built-in Billing API migration tool moves subscriptions into managed App Pricing for free. We'd test the native path before writing custom billing or reporting code.
